For many years now, since the invention of the romantic comedy in 1998, they have had a stigma of being cheesy and non serious. Well, when it comes to Voicemails for Isabelle that’s largely true. However, not in the way you would think. Jill has a sick little sister (the titular Isabelle) and she lives a full life because Isabelle can’t. She has a dream of being a baker, probably for the plot or because one of the writers knows someone who’s a baker and that made it easier to write a believable screenplay. Wes (the kid from Dear Simon, I’m pretty sure) plays a convincing manchild and when he starts receiving voicemails meant for Izzy (sorry, her friends call her that) he eventually is able to have a relationship through that proxy. Jill, Isabelle’s older sister, almost gave up on love after she sleeps with Lukas Gage, it was NOT fun, and he vows to destroy her. She was pursued by a British relationship podcaster who looks like Shemar Moore’s hotter and more ripped little brother, which really left her dejected and hopeless. That is until. . . . . Wes pops up out of nowhere like its a goddamned Jane Austin novel (novella?)

Now, there’s a lot we can say about Wes (no relation to any ex-Bravo stars) but during their courtship we find out his mom died when he was young, which explains why he is the way he is. But he’s into Magic: The Gathering so I think we should give him a pass for the most part. One of the more hilarious plot points is that Wes’ best friends are getting married and as the Best Man he’s supposed to give a speech. Both the groom and the bride don’t feel good about him giving this speech about love and marriage, NOR should they! Lol! He is bad at it. Fast forward to the wedding she is a guest at and she finds out he has been getting her voicemails meant for her dead sister. Then, it all clicks into place for her, she had a feeling it was too good to be true and she should have trusted herself- perhaps a bit of a bad lesson to teach pessimistic (or “realistic”) people but hey, I just work in a machine shop. Once you skip all the character building stuff they end up together and the movie ends, Jill is on the phone leaving a voicemail for her Izzy claiming it’ll be the last. Overall, it was a solid movie, and I almost used a different quote about MTG cards though.

Actually they’re not just cards, they’re actually collectibles

A Real Man
