-Literal Death

I would watch this one again with you, that’s how much I liked it. It starts off with the titular character being a rascal, throwing parties, fighting monsters, drinking leche, the usual stuff. After biting the dust he is visited by an unusual wolf wielding a pair of sickles (chekhov’s sickles?) claiming a bounty on ol’ Puss in Boots head.

Great story of family, friends, trust, fear, loss, pride, and making your wishes come true in the absence of magic. There’s also a very sad story line that involves a Chihuahua and a sock, but with a lot of great voice acting cameos it doesn’t bring down the mood of the movie. It’s an oddly uplifting movie. The animation is okay, I like the fight scenes. I know you don’t really notice those kinds of things but I think you would notice, it sort of distracts from the movie a bit, as the animation styles are close enough it doesn’t have the same juxtaposition of something like the cinematography in Kill Bill.

The one confusing thing is at the end Puss-in-Boots says he’s going to visit some old friends but the soundtrack to Shrek 2 is playing in the background. I initially thought this was a teaser for his, and his new compadre’s role in Shrek 5. But was it a call back to his appearance in Shrek 2? I guess now I have to do a follow-up to let you know if Perrito is in the new installation.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 1/2
