WHY ME??
-me, after I change a setting I’m 90% sure will crash my PC
Alright, so this time I actually didn’t break it! I downloaded some windows updates (🚩 counter: 1) so I could try out the Xbox Mode. Allegedly this reduces some background tasks, freeing up more resources (mostly RAM) for better performance. One of the updates was a BIOS update from HP, inc. Well, when this update was being installed the update failed. This is very rare, but what’s worse is I couldn’t find a way to get to the BIOS/UEFI menu to flash a working BIOS. I could have gotten new motherboard, but then I would have to get a new case and power supply.
In an effort to save some money I decided to take it to the PC repair shop. But he recommended getting another motherboard from the manufacturer and that cost almost as much as all those other parts I was looking at having to get.
So! He gets the replacement mobo (motherboard) in, installs it aaaaaand. . . no power 😭. The seller refunded it right away (maybe they knew it might be a bad board?) and ordered a new one Friday before Memorial Day weekend. Of course, it didn’t ship until after the holiday weekend.
Pros and Cons of new hardware
If I were to get the new hardware the upside would be in the power supply and the motherboard. I could potentially be able to use the extra RAM sitting in my cloffice™️. The case would be bigger though, and I like the form factor of the HP Pavilion case. It would also cost more money to do it upgrade all those parts. If I want 32 GB of RAM I could sell the 4 stick of 8 GB RAM I have now as a set (provided their timings are the same) and buy a set of 2 sticks of 16 GB RAM for the 2 slots I have on the HP mobo. There are also small form factor cases but they are expensive, and that would take my upgrade costs from around $250 to well over $300. At those Prices I could also look at an entirely new PC. So that sort of defeats the purpose.
Final Verdict?
I’m just sad I haven’t had my PC in a while to play the games I want. I have my Hawke Point (yes, named after Ethan and Tony) laptop I’m writing on right meow to give this update, but it can’t play the more complex, bigger games. But I did find Portal Knights on my back log, and I downloaded TCG Shop Simulator. You make fun of me when I play TCG Shop Simulator, but it’s a price I’m willing to pay to have fun 😔. In a few years they’ll have laptops that can play AAA titles affordably, but until then I have enough easier to run games. . . hell, I might actually get into Skyrim or just play Oblivion again.
